Premise
Vishambharnath and Rajshri Maheshwari arrange their daughter Akshara's wedding to Naitik Singhania, a young businessman hailing from a traditional Marwari joint family based in Udaipur. The series follows the course of Akshara and Naitik's lives as they adjust as a married couple, become parents of young children and look after their extended families.
Three years after their marriage, Akshara gives birth to Naksh and a year later, Naitik falls into coma due an accident.
Four years later
Four years later, Naitik recovers from coma and returns to the family. Then he initially struggles to gain acceptance from his son, Naksh; however, is supported by Akshara to win over Naksh. Meanwhile, Naitik's mother Gayatri dies and his father Raj Shekhar marries a divorcee Devyani, who has two children from her previous marriage.
Parallel story arcs
Parallel with Akshara and Naitik's story, the lives of their respective siblings also formed significant story arcs in the series. Sub-plots have been developed around the lives of Naitik's sisters- Nandini and Rashmi. The series has also focused on Naitik's step-siblings, and has dealt with Akshara's elder brother Shaurya's love story with her best friend Varsha.
Two years pass-by like this, and when Mahendra Pratap (Naitik's uncle) dies, his widow and Naitik's aunt Kaveri blames Akshara for the same and kicks her out of the house. Naitik, Akshara, Naksh and newborn Naira (Akshara and Naitik's daughter) leave their extended family.
10 years later
Within 2 years after parting from his family, Naitik relocates himself, his wife and his children to South Africa and the family has been living in Cape Town for the past ten years. A 19 year old Naksh returns to Udaipur and counsels his grand aunt, whom he convinces to forgive Akshara, pointing out her innocence; and thus the family returns to their original home. Naksh falls in love with Tara and wedding plans are made, but she breaks up with him only minutes before the ceremony. One and a half years pass-by, and teenage Naira runs away from Akshara over some disappointment, and lives in Rishikesh for the next 7 years.
Few years later
When Akshara is finally able to find Naira, Naira is made to return to her family and Akshara gradually resolves her differences between Naira. Soon a love triangle forms between Naira, her cousin Gayu and Naitik's employee Kartik. Kartik loves Naira and confesses his love to her. Naira considers setting aside her feelings so Gayu can be happy, but after unexpected help from her teenage step-cousin Mishti, Naira truly realizes and confesses her love to Kartik.
Later, Akshara dies in a car accident and a drunk Kartik is blamed, dividing the families (the Singhanias and the Goenkas), but Naira proves his innocence and her family accepts him. Both Naira and Kartik's families arrange their wedding, as Kartik-Naira aka 'Kaira' marry. Kartik stayed away from his family because he thinks that his father Manish and stepmother Suvarna were responsible for his mother Soumya's death; but after marriage, Naira makes it clear to Kartik that his mother had mental disorder and Manish-Suvarna were not responsible for her suicide.
Later it is revealed that Kartik's cousin, Mansi was responsible for Akshara's death. Kartik-Naira later work together to help his sister Keerti gain a divorce from her abusive husband Aditya. Thereafter, after initially facing pressure from the family, Naksh falls in love with and marries Keerti. Later Kartik-Naira and Naksh-Keerti go to Greece for their honeymoon.
It is revealed that Kartik has a stepbrother Shubham (Manish and Suvarna's son). He has hatred for Kartik as Suvarna had abandoned him when he was born, for Kartik. Kartik and Naira bring him into the family and win his love. Kartik reconciles with his parents. Naira faces pregnancy complications and undergoes surgery. Later, Shubham becomes a drug addict and when Naira comes to know of his drug addiction, he requests her to hide the truth from the family. Shubham soon dies of drug abuse, and Suvarna and Kartik hold Naira responsible for not telling them about Shubham's drug addiction within time. Kartik tells Naira to leave the house until Suvarna recovers from her pain, but Naira misunderstands Kartik thinking that he does not love and trust her. Naira meets with an accident.
Two years later
Two years pass, Naira and Kartik stay separated. Naira along with Naitik has shifted to Mumbai, where she begins her studies in a college. Meanwhile, Suvarna has developed hatred towards Naira and wants to make Kartik marry his childhood friend Aashi. Manish sends Kartik to Mumbai for his college project. Kartik and Naira meet each other as a guest professor and his student respectively. Coincidentally, they become neighbors. Initially, they fight with each other but soon start realizing their love.
Suvarna comes to know that Kartik-Naira are together in Mumbai and meets with an accident. Seeing Suvarna's hatred for her and Kartik's pain, Naira gives divorce papers to Kartik. Unwillingly, Kartik also agrees and during Mansi and Anmol's (Naira's cousin's) wedding, Kartik-Naira get divorced. Soon after, Kartik-Naira realize their mistakes and mutual love; and after seeking one another's apology, they want to get remarried but their families disagree. Keerti gets pregnant.
Naira discovers that she has a brain clot and may lose her memory or die. She tells Suvarna to make Kartik marry some other girl so that he forgets Naira and moves on in life. Suvarna finally realizes her wrongdoings and tells Kartik the truth. Kartik enacts that he is marrying Aashi but later reveals his drama when Naira realizes that her decision was wrong. Singhanias and Goenkas agree for the wedding but, Naira's health worsens. The doctor tells Kartik that Naira has to undergo surgery the next day. Naira requests Kartik to marry her before surgery and Kaira finally gets remarried. Naira's surgery is successful. Kartik brings Naira back to Goenka house.
Manish's cousin Samarth tries to create differences between Manish and Akhilesh to take revenge from Suhasini. Kartik-Naira reunite the family and make Samarth a part of the Goenka family. After a big reunion event of the family named 'Rishton ka Utsav', Naira gets pregnant.
Four months later, Kartik-Naira and Naksh-Keerti meet with a car accident after which Naira undergoes premature delivery, but her baby dies. Elsewhere Keerti slips into coma and delivers a baby boy. Kartik hands over Keerti's baby Krish to Naira on seeing Naira and Keerti's conditions. During the naming ceremony, Keerti regains her consciousness after which whole family comes to know about the child swap and confronts Kartik, while Naira loses her memory. An infuriated Naksh doesn't want Naira-Kartik to unite again and separates them.
Naira returns to her maiden home and joins dance classes where Sid alias Kartik befriends her and makes her fall in love with him once again, despite Naira not remembering any past events. Naksh tries to get into talks of Naira's marriage with his friend, however, with Naira's cousins Mishti and Kuhu's help, Naira and Kartik are able to convince him and the family that their happiness lies with each other. Later amid Holi celebration Naira regains her memory.
Suhasini's brother Puru's lewd behavior irks Naira, while Gayu gets pregnant with her friend Vivan's child, however Vivan dies all of a sudden, leaving Gayu heartbroken. Later, Samarth (Kartik's younger paternal uncle) proposes to marry and accept Gayu with her child. Naira and Kartik later expose Puru and get him arrested amidst Gayu and Samarth's wedding celebrations. Puru later threatens Manish to destroy his business. Meanwhile, Manish survives a heart attack resultant from huge business loss, as plotted by Puru.
